Die Organisation für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit (engl. Economic Cooperation Organization, kurz ECO) wurde 1985 von Iran, Pakistan und der Türkei gegründet mit der Grundidee, eine Art Freihandelszone zu schaffen.

Sie ist eine Nachfolgeorganisation der Organisation Regionale Zusammenarbeit für Entwicklung (RCD von Regional Cooperation for Development), die von 1964 bis 1979 bestand. Die ECO hat unterdessen sieben neue Mitglieder aufgenommen: Afghanistan, Aserbaidschan, Kasachstan, Kirgisistan, Tadschikistan, Turkmenistan und Usbekistan.

Die ECO hat ihren Sitz in Teheran (Iran). Ihr derzeitiger Generalsekretär ist Khurshid Anwar aus Pakistan.

Organisation/Organe

Der ECO steht ein Koordinierungsrat der Außenminister vor, der jährlich tagt. Vier Ausschüsse sind zuständig für die Zusammenarbeit auf den Gebieten Wirtschaft und Infrastruktur, Technik und Industrie, Landwirtschaft sowie Erziehung und Wissenschaft.

Geschichte

1988 wurde eine gemeinsame Postorganisation gegründet (die South and West Asia Postal Union), 1990 dann eine gemeinsame Industrie- und Handelskammer. 1991 unterzeichneten die Mitglieder der ECO ein Protokoll über Präferenzzölle. 1992 wurden eine ECO-Investitionsbank und eine Kulturorganisation gegründet. Zusätzlich strebt die ECO eine Zollunion an.
