Die Santa-Ana-Winde, auch Teufelswinde, Teufelshauch oder roter Wind genannt, sind warme, trockene Winde die hauptsächlich im Spätherbst und Winter das Wetter in Südkalifornien beeinflussen. Sie werden von den Einheimischen auch Teufelshauch genannt.

Die Santa-Ana-Winde sind Fallwinde, die im Großen Becken zwischen der Sierra Nevada und den Rocky Mountains entstehen.

Entstehung

Von September bis März entsteht ein Hochdruckgebiet über dem Hochplateau der US-Bundesstaaten Nevada, Utah und Idaho. Die Luft, die anfangs noch kalt ist, bewegt sich dann auf die Pazifikküste zu. Durch den Höhenabfall wird die Luft erwärmt und zusätzlich durch die engen Canyons stark beschleunigt. Ferner wird die Luft auch sehr trocken, da sie auch noch die Mojavewüste durchquert. Der heiße Wind entzieht den Pflanzen zusätzlich das in ihnen gespeicherte Wasser. Diese Kombination aus Hitze, Trockenheit und Wind führt häufig zu Waldbränden.
