Das Scarborough-Riff (engl. Scarborough Reef oder Scarborough Shoal) bezeichnet ein weitgehend versunkenes Atoll, das sich im Chinesischen Meer befindet und sowohl von den Philippinen (geografischer Grund) als auch von der Republik China und der Volksrepublik China (aus historischen Gründen) beansprucht wird. Derzeit wird das Scarborough-Riff von den Philippinen verwaltet. Es ist 19 km breit, 13 km lang und bedeckt eine Fläche von etwa 150 km², wovon rund 130 km² auf die zentrale Lagune entfallen.

Bedeutung

Dem Riff des Atolls liegen mehrere kleine Inseln auf, die im Normalfall nur bei Flut erreicht werden können und sich maximal bis zu 3 m aus dem Meer erheben. Das Gebiet ist als Fischfanggrund wichtig. Außerdem zählt es unter dem Amateurfunkpräfix BS7 als eine DXCC-Entität. Aufgrund dessen finden im Normalfall alle paar Jahre Expeditionen zu dem Riff statt, wobei diese aufgrund der politisch ungeklärten Situation mitunter problematisch werden können (so verlor 1997 bei einer solchen Expedition ein beteiligter Amateurfunker sein Leben).
