Besonderes Schutzgebiet (BSG) ist eine gebräuchliche, auch in amtlichen Veröffentlichungen benutzte Sammelbezeichnung für Schutzgebiete, die explizit als Bestandteil des Schutzgebietssystems Natura 2000 der Europäischen Union nach Maßgabe der einschlägigen Richtlinien ausgewiesen wurden.
Der semantische Rang von „besonderes Schutzgebiet“ als feststehender Fachbegriff wurde durch die Richtlinie 92/43/EWG (FFH-Richtlinie) geprägt. Die Entsprechung im englischsprachigen Text dieser Richtlinie lautet „Special area of conservation“ (SAC).
Ausschließlich in einigen Bezügen auf die Richtlinie 79/409/EWG (Vogelschutzrichtlinie) wird von der FFH-Richtlinie auch der Begriff „Special protection area“ (SPA) verwendet, im Deutschen ebenfalls mit „besonderes Schutzgebiet“ wiedergegeben. Allerdings ist das entsprechende Vorkommen des Begriffs in der Vogelschutzrichtlinie (Artikel 4, Absatz 1) im deutschen Text mit „besondere Schutzmaßnahmen“ übersetzt.
Besondere Schutzgebiete nach den Maßgaben der FFH-Richtlinie und Besondere Schutzgebiete nach den Maßgaben der Vogelschutzrichtlinie unterscheiden sich hinsichtlich ihrer Zielstellung und Behandlung, können sich jedoch territorial beliebig überlappen. Dem Bedarf nach eindeutiger Bezeichnung bzw. Abgrenzung entsprechend haben sich in Deutschland die Begriffe FFH-Gebiet und Europäisches Vogelschutzgebiet etabliert. Für letzteres ist häufig auch die Kurzform „Vogelschutzgebiet“ oder als bedeutungsfest gewordener Begriff das englischsprachige „Special protection area“ bzw. seine Abkürzung „SPA“ (gelegentlich fälschlich erweitert zu „SPA-Gebiet“) anzutreffen.
