Ein Tasbih (‏تسبيح‎, DMG tasbīḥ; auch Tashbih, Tesbih, Tespih oder Masbaha) ist eine im Islam gebräuchliche Gebetskette.

Funktion

Der Tasbih ist ein Hilfsmittel bei der Ausführung von Dhikr, u. a. bestehend aus den 99 Namen Allahs oder das Preisen Allahs nach dem Gebet mit den Formeln Subhan Allah (33x, Erhaben ist Gott), Al-hamdulillah (33x, gelobt sei Gott) und Allahu Akbar (33x, Gott ist groß).

Er wird meist aus Holzperlen gefertigt, es gibt aber auch Kränze aus Olivenkernen, Elfenbein, Perlen, Glas oder Kunststoff. Oft besteht ein Tasbih aus 33 oder 99 Perlen mit einer größeren Perle dazwischen. Es gibt außerdem Ketten mit 11 oder 1.000 Perlen.

Geschichte

Man vermutet, dass die Muslime den Tasbih von der Buddhistischen Mala übernommen und anschließend die christlichen Kreuzfahrer ihn als Rosenkranz nach Europa gebracht haben. Papst Pius V. schreibt im Jahr 1596 in einer Bulle, dass Dominikus, der Gründer des Dominikanerordens, den Rosenkranz 1221 im Abendland eingeführt habe.

In der Anfangszeit des Islam sollen Gläubige an Stelle eines Tasbih die Namen Gottes mit Hilfe kleiner Steine oder mit den Fingern rezitiert haben. Weil demnach der Prophet Mohammed vermutlich keinen Tasbih benutzt hat, lehnen ihn Wahhabiten als unislamische Neuerung ab, obwohl Muhammads Freund und erster Kalif Abu Bakr schon einen Tasbih in Form eines mit Knoten versehenen Seiles benutzte.

Der Tasbih wird heute, ähnlich wie das griechische Komboloi, in säkularisierten Kreisen auch als Schmuck verwendet und gilt als Männlichkeitsattribut.
