Cacops aspidephorus Cacops morrisi

Cacops ist eine ausgestorbene Gattung der Dissorophidae aus der Gruppe der Temnospondyli. Fossilien wurden in den USA gefunden, die aus dem Unterperm stammten. Die Typusart, Cacops aspidephorus, wurde 1910 von Samuel Wendell Williston beschrieben; die zweite Art Cacops morrisi wurde von Reisz et al. im Jahr 2009 benannt^[1].

Beschreibung und Paläobiologie

Cacops erreichte eine Länge von 40 cm. Es war an eine terrestrische Lebensweise angepasst. Der Schädel war schwer gebaut. Die Beine waren kräftig, der Schwanz war kurz. Cacops besaß eine Reihe von Panzerplatten auf dem Rücken. Verglichen mit anderen Dissorophidae besaß Cacops eine große otische Kerbe im Hirnschädel sowie ein großes Trommelfell.

Edwin Colbert vermutete, dass Cacops nachtaktiv war, ähnlich wie heutige Frösche.

Systematik

Cacops war ein Vertreter der Dissorophidae. Sein nächster Verwandter ist Kamacops; beide werden zur Cacopinae zusammengefasst. Ein weiterer Verwandter könnte Aspidosaurus sein^[2]. Das Schwestertaxon bildet die Dissorophinae mit den einzigen Gattungen Dissorophus und Broiliellus. Es folgt ein Kladogramm nach Reisz et al. (2009):^[1]
