Fannie Lou Hamer (* 6. Oktober 1917 in Ruleville, Montgomery County, Mississippi, als Fannie Lou Townsend; † 14. März 1977 in Mound Bayou, Mississippi) war eine schwarze US-amerikanische Bürgerrechtskämpferin. In den 1960er Jahren kämpfte sie in den USA für das Stimmrecht und die Gleichberechtigung der Afroamerikaner.

Leben

Fannie Lou Hamer war das jüngste unter 20 Geschwistern einer Baumwollpflückerfamilie; ihr Großvater war noch Sklave gewesen. 1944 heiratete sie Perry Hamer (1912–1992) und arbeitete als Baumwollpflückerin auf einer Plantage im Sunflower County. 1962 versuchte sie sich im Sunflower County in das Wählerverzeichnis einzutragen. Sie verlor ihren Arbeitsplatz, wurde mehrfach festgenommen, misshandelt und 1963 in Winona inhaftiert. Sie war Mitglied des Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee sowie Gründungsmitglied der Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party und wurde deren zweite Vorsitzende. 1969 gründete sie die Freedom Farm Cooperative, die bedürftigen Schwarzen und Weißen Arbeit gab und diese finanziell unterstützte. Die Kooperative bestand bis 1974.
