Handlung

Die 18jährige Kellnerin Donna ist mit ihrem Leben unzufrieden. Sie lernt auf einem Jahrmarkt eine wandernde Zirkustruppe kennen, der sie sich anschließt. Die Truppe reist durch den Süden der USA.

Donna flirtet zuerst mit dem Clown Frankie, dann hat sie eine Affäre mit Patch. Dies führt zu Konflikten zwischen den einstigen Freunden.

Am Ende freundet sich Donna mit Gerta an.

Kritiken

Roger Ebert kritisierte in der Chicago Sun-Times vom 22. Juli 1980, die Handlung des Films wäre „dünn“. Er lobte die Darstellungen von Gary Busey, Robbie Robertson und Jodie Foster.

Dave Kehr schrieb im „Chicago Reader“, die Charaktere wären „sentimental“. Er kritisierte die Regie von Robert Kaylor, der früher einige Dokumentarfilme drehen würde, als „banal“ wegen des Realismuses der Bilder.
