Macaroni and cheese (oft auch in der Kurzform mac and cheese) ist ein vor allem in den USA, Kanada und Großbritannien verbreitetes Nudelgericht. Hierfür werden Makkaroni mit einer Käsesoße vermischt und mit geriebenem Käse im Ofen überbacken. Zur genauen Zusammensetzung des Gerichts, der Soße und der zu verwendenden Käsesorten existieren unzählige Rezepte und Varianten.[1][2]

Mac and cheese ist ein fester Bestandteil der amerikanischen Alltagsküche und gehört in vielen Dinern zum Standardangebot. Beliebt ist es auch als Beilage zum Barbecue. Als Fertiggericht wurde es 1937 von Kraft Foods unter dem Namen Kraft Dinner (heute in den USA unter dem Namen Kraft Cheese & Macaroni) auf den Markt gebracht und erfreut sich bis heute großer Popularität.

Einer weit verbreiteten Geschichte zufolge soll Thomas Jefferson das Gericht erfunden haben, was jedoch unzutreffend ist.[3]

In der Schweiz existiert mit Älplermagronen ein ähnliches Gericht.
