Das Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy Project (kurz: RITE Project) ist ein Projekt zur Energiegewinnung aus der Gezeitenströmung im East River in New York City.

Lage und Konzept

RITE ist ein Meeresströmungskraftwerk und befindet sich im East Channel des East River zwischen dem New Yorker Stadtteil Queens und Roosevelt Island nördlich der Roosevelt Island Bridge. RITE besteht aus Turbinen, die auf dem Grund des East Rivers verankert werden und die Gezeitenströmung des East Rivers ausnutzen. Da der East River kein Fluss, sondern eine Meerenge zwischen dem Long Island Sound und der New York Bay ist, werden dort aufgrund des Querschnitts und der Tiden Strömungsgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu annähernd 2,7 Metern pro Sekunde erreicht[1].

Projektgeschichte und Entwicklung

Die Betreibergesellschaft von RITE, Verdant Power, begann mit der Projektentwicklung im Jahr 2002 [2]. Ab 2006 wurden eine Demonstrationsanlage mit sechs fünf Meter hohen Turbinen mit einer Leistung von je 35kW im East River verankert, die Strom für einen Supermarkt und ein Parkhaus auf Roosevelt Island liefern[3]. Allerdings erwies sich die Strömung als so stark, dass Turbinenblätter abgerissen wurden und die Turbinen umkonstruiert werden mussten. Nach Behebung der Mängel plant Verdant Power, bis 2012 eine Anlage mit 30 Turbinen und einer Leistung von 1MW zu errichten[4], langfristig sind sogar bis zu 300 Turbinen vorgesehen.[5]. Das Projekt wird von der Energiebehörde des Staates New York, der New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, mit 2,5 Millionen Dollar gefördert.
