The European ist ein Onlinemagazin, das Ende September 2009 erstmals erschienen ist. Herausgeber und Chefredakteur ist Alexander Görlach,[1] der zuvor Ressortleiter Online beim Berliner Magazin Cicero war.[2]

Die Webseite bringt keine Nachrichten, sondern beschränkt sich darauf, Meinungen „bekannter Autoren“ über Nachrichten [3] sowie Interviews zu veröffentlichen. Sie will „gesellschaftliche Debatten anstoßen und dauerhaft fortsetzen“.[4] Der Name wurde von der gleichnamigen früheren Wochenzeitung übernommen, die Anfang der 1990er Jahre von Robert Maxwell lanciert worden war.

Das Magazin steht - laut Darstellung seines Herausgebers - im Ruf eines konservativen Mediums. Görlach selbst betont jedoch den Pluralismus seiner Gastautoren.[5] Kolumnen in dem Magazin haben unter anderem Alan Posener (Die Welt), Matthias Matussek, Jan Fleischhauer (beide Spiegel) und Birgit von Heintze (ehemalige Chefreporterin der Bild).[6]

Ein Anfang Oktober 2010 gestarteter englischsprachiger Ableger des Magazins zielt auf den internationalen Markt.[7]
