Das Flatiron Building (Bügeleisengebäude), auch unter dem ursprünglichen Namen Fuller Building bekannt, ist neben der Freiheitsstatue, dem Chrysler Building sowie dem Empire State Building eines der Wahrzeichen von New York City. Das 1902 erbaute Gebäude ist eines der ältesten Hochhäuser New Yorks.

Das Gebäude liegt im Herzen von Manhattan an der Kreuzung 5th Avenue und Broadway, zwischen 22. und 23. Straße.

Wissenswertes

Entgegen anderslautenden Behauptungen war das Flatiron Building zum Zeitpunkt seiner Erbauung nicht das höchste Gebäude in New York. Das Park Row Building (119,2 Meter) war von 1899 bis 1908 das höchste Gebäude in New York.

Wegen seiner Fassade ist ihm seine Stahlkonstruktion nicht von außen anzusehen. Die New Yorker befürchteten anfangs, dass es beim ersten stärkeren Sturm einstürzen würde.

Durch die ungewöhnliche dreieckige Grundform des Gebäudes wird das Grundstück an der spitzwinkligen Kreuzung 5th Avenue/Broadway geschickt ausgenutzt. Dieser Form verdankt das Gebäude seinen Namen („Bügeleisengebäude“). Die Schmalseite an der Straßenkreuzung ist lediglich zwei Meter lang.

Die aerodynamische Form des Gebäudes führte dazu, dass sich in den Straßen starke Winde bildeten. Frauen mussten daher aufpassen, dass ihre Röcke nicht hochgeweht wurden. Es heißt, dass in den frühen Tagen des Gebäudes Männer extra zu dem Gebäude kamen, um den damals seltenen Anblick unbedeckter Frauenbeine erhaschen zu können. Um dies zu unterbinden, wurde eigens ein Polizeibeamter abgestellt.

In den Filmen Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 und Spider-Man 3 ist das Flatiron Buildung als Redaktionssitz der Zeitung Daily Bugle zu sehen. In den Filmen ist an der Schmalseite des Gebäudes eine Neonreklame angebracht, die den Namen der Zeitung zeigt. Es war tatsächlich viele Jahre Sitz der amerikanischen Tochter des wissenschaftlichen Springer-Verlags. Außerdem stellt das Gebäude den Hauptsitz der fiktiven Mode-Firma Veronica's Closet in der Serie Veronica dar. In dem Film Die unendliche Geschichte fungiert das Flatiron Building als Bibliothek, in der der Hauptdarsteller das gleichnamige Buch entdeckt. 2005 war die gesamte Schmalseite von einer übergroßen H&M-Werbung verdeckt, die selbst vom Empire State Building aus zu lesen war.
