Der Alexandra Palace (auch bekannt unter dem Spitznamen Ally Pally) wurde 1873 als Freizeit- und Erholungspark „The People’s Palace” auf einer Anhöhe im Norden des Londoner Stadtbezirks Haringey eröffnet.

Geschichte

Zwei Wochen nach der Eröffnung brannte das Gebäude fast vollständig ab, wurde aber in den darauffolgenden zwei Jahren wieder aufgebaut. Im ersten Weltkrieg wurden deutsche Kriegsgefangene hier interniert. Aufgrund seiner exponierten Lage wurde der Alexandra Palace ab 1935 für die ersten Fernsehübertragungen der BBC in Großbritannien eingesetzt. Die Ausstrahlung erfolgt seitdem vom Südostturm der Anlage. Seit Dezember 2007 ist der Alexandra Palace der jährliche Austragungsort der Dartweltmeisterschaft der PDC.[1] Damit setzt sich die lange Tradition der Dartturniere im Palace fort, in dem unter anderem bis 1990 das News of the World Darts Tournament, das älteste Dartturnier der Welt ausgetragen wurde.

Anfahrt

Erreichbar ist das Gebäude mit der Piccadilly Line bis zur Station Wood Green (Londoner U-Bahn). Die Alexandra Palace Station ist der Bahnhof der British Rail.
