King William’s Town ist eine Stadt in der Gemeinde Buffalo City, Distrikt Amathole, Provinz Ostkap in Südafrika. Die Stadt liegt in der Nähe der Hafenstadt East London und grenzt an die Provinzhauptstadt Bisho.

Geschichte

King William’s Town war ursprünglich eine Missionsstation. Im Jahre 1835 wurde sie von den Xhosa-Stämmen zerstört. Nachdem ein Militärstützpunkt von den Engländern angelegt wurde, kamen die Missionare zurück und gründeten die Stadt. 1858 wurde die Stadt von Deutschen in der Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben besiedelt. Doch viele Siedler verhungerten. Am 5. Mai 1890 wurde King William's Town an das Eisenbahnnetz angeschlossen.[1]

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Heute hat das Amathole-Museum einen Sammlungsteil zur Geschichte der frühen europäischen Besiedlung, darunter über deutsche Einwanderer. Im Missionary Museum, eine Außenstelle des Amathole-Museums, wird ein Einblick in die Arbeit der Missionare im südlichen Afrika geboten.
