Die Faselbohne (Lablab purpureus) ist eine Nutzpflanze aus der Familie der Hülsenfrüchtler (Fabaceae oder Leguminosae), Unterfamilie Schmetterlingsblütler (Faboideae).Sie ist nahe verwandt mit einer Reihe anderer, „Bohnen“ genannten Feldfrüchte. Im deutschen Sprachraum ist auch die Bezeichnung Helmbohne, neuerdings auch Hyazinth-Bohne gebräuchlich.

Verbreitung

Die Faselbohne hat ihren Ursprung entweder im nordöstlichen Afrika oder in Indien. Sie benötigt hohe Temperaturen (>20 °C), aber relativ wenig Wasser. Sie verträgt hingegen keine stauende Nässe. Sie verträgt wie die meisten Bohnen keinen Frost.

Beschreibung

Die Faselbohne ist eine stark wuchernde Kletterpflanze, die bis zu 10 m weit (in gemäßigten Klima meist um 2 m) rankt.

Die Blüten sind rosa bis violett und duften angenehm. Sie sitzen in Trauben an einem bis 20 cm langen Stiel. Die Blütezeit ist in Europa ab Juni.

Die purpurroten Hülsenfrüchte sind knapp 20 cm lang, mit gut 1 cm langen und 0,5 cm dicken, ovalen Samen. Samen und Schoten sind wie bei anderen Bohnen im rohen Zustand wegen der enthaltenen cyanogenen Glykoside giftig. Das Gift wird durch Kochen zerstört.

Nutzung

Die Verwendungsmöglichkeiten der Faselbohne sind vielfältig: Man kann die unreifen Hülsen und Samen, sowie die reifen Samen essen oder die Pflanze als Bodenverbesserer nutzen.

In Europa wird sie außerdem als Sichtschutz und wegen ihrer duftenden, violetten Blüten als Zierpflanze zum Beranken von Zäunen u.ä. genutzt.

Blätter und Stängel werden in den Tropen auch als Heu verwendet.
