Der Dienstgrad Lance Sergeant (kurz: LSgt oder L/Sgt) ist in den Armeen des britischen Commonwealth ein Corporal der mit einem Sergeant gleichzusetzen ist, bzw. ihn vertritt. Der Dienstgrad Lance Sergeant ersetzt in Garderegimentern den Dienstgrad Corporal. Es ist der niedrigste Unteroffizersdienstgrad (der Eliteregimenter der Foot Guards und der Honourable Artillery Company). Er steht über dem Dienstgrad Lance Corporal und unter dem Dienstgrad Sergeant.

Geschichte

Der Dienstgrad entstammt der britischen Armee. Queen Victoria wollte ihren Leibwachen/ Leibgardisten etwas mehr Glanz verleihen, indem sie ihnen einen zusätzlichen Streifen (bzw. Uniformwinkel) hinzufügte und so die Lance Corporals von da an zwei Streifen und die Corporals (Lance Sergeants) drei Streifen besaßen. Lance Sergeants tauchten zum ersten Mal im 19. Jahrhunderts auf, bis der Dienstgrad 1946 weitgehend abgeschafft wurde, nur die Foot Guards (Fußgarden) und die Honourable Artillery Company (Ehrenartilleriekompanie) behielten ihn bis heute bei.

Obwohl Lance Sergeants und Sergeants einigermaßen gleichzusetzen sind, wird vom Rest der regulären britischen Armee der Lance Sergeant als ein Corporal angesehen. In den Eliteregimentern der Foot Guards und Honourable Artillery Company werden Angehörige anstatt des Corporals zu Lance Sergeants ernannt. Lance Sergeants verrichten die gleichen Tätigkeiten wie ein Corporal in anderen regulären Regimentern, haben also mit dem Sergeant nur den Namen und nicht die Aufgabenbereiche, Besoldung und Privilegien gemein. Manche Kadetteneinheiten behielten den Dienstgrad Lance Sergeant anstatt Corporal bis in die späten 1980er Jahre. Das Household Cavalry Equivalent zum Lance Sergeant ist der Lance Corporal of Horse.

Lance Sergeants haben drei weiße und (full) Sergeants drei goldene nach unten stehende Uniformwinkel als Dienstgradabzeichen.
