Association football

Unter dem Begriff Association football versteht man das Fußballspiel nach den Regeln der Football Association, dem englischen Fußballverband. Das Regelwerk dazu entstand 1863. Mit „Association football“ ist also das gemeint, was heute im deutschsprachigen Raum unter „Fußball“ verstanden wird.

Dieser Begriff wird vor allem dann verwendet, wenn zwischen Fußball und dem American Football bzw. Australian Football oder Rugby abgegrenzt werden muss, da die meisten kontinental-europäischen Fußballklubs im 19. Jahrhundert anfänglich Rugby spielten.

Der US-amerikanische Begriff „soccer“ leitet sich als Kurzform von „Association“ ab.
