Handlung

Veronica Van Huet führt die Privatschule mit einem angeschlossenen Internat, die nach der Lady Margaret Oakes benannt wurde. Sie übernahm die renovierungsbedürftige Einrichtung als Erbe und kämpft gegen finanzielle Engpässe. Veronica ist in ihrer zweiten Ehe mit dem Amerikaner Matthew verheiratet, einem erfolglosen Künstler.

Louise Thompson, eine der Schülerinnen, bleibt während der Ferien im Internat. Sie hat eine Affäre mit Matthew. Als Veronica über die Affäre erfährt, macht ihr Mann Schluss mit den Seitensprüngen.

Eines Tages ist Matthew verschollen. Er soll nach Italien gefahren sein, welcher Auskunft Louise keinen Glauben schenkt. Sie fühlt sich von Veronica bedroht.
