Out of character

Der Begriff Out of character (dt: außerhalb der Rolle), abgekürzt OOC oder OoC, kommt aus der Theater- und Filmbranche, wo er den Zustand beschreibt, in dem ein Schauspieler aus seiner aktuellen Rolle aussteigt, um etwa direkt zu den Zuschauern zu sprechen und Teile seiner oder der allgemeinen Handlung näher zu erläutern. In verschiedenen Fernsehserien wird diese Art der Darstellung ebenfalls genutzt. Anschließen begeben sie sich wieder in ihre Rolle und die zuvor gestoppte Handlung läuft weiter.

Daraus abgeleitet wird der Begriff auch in Computer- oder Rollenspielen benutzt, wenn ein Mitspieler nicht im Rahmen seiner Rolle handelt oder spricht.

In Fan-Fiction

Im Bereich der Fan-Fiction wird der Begriff des Out of Character meist abwertend genutzt und ist die Bezeichnung für Charaktere, die sich aus einem meist von Autor nicht näher erläuterten Grund oder gar grundlos nicht so verhalten, wie der Leser es von ihm gewohnt ist. Beispielsweise ist eine sonst in sich gekehrte und ruhige Person plötzlich aufbrausend und extrovertiert.

Diese Art des Schreibens wird von den meisten anderen Fan-Fiction-Schreibern und Fans abgelehnt und entsprechende Geschichten werden gemieden, da die bekannte Persönlichkeit des Charakters häufig zerstört wird und er dadurch unglaubwürdig wirkt. Kann der Autor den Grund für das Verhalten des Charakters glaubwürdig darstellen, wird das Out of Character jedoch in den meisten Fällen akzeptiert.
