Die Region La Libertad (span. Región La Libertad, Quechua La Libertad suyu) ist eine Region im nordöstlichen Peru. Auf einer Fläche von 25.515 km2 leben 1.365.735 Menschen (1996). Die Hauptstadt ist Trujillo.

Geographie

In La Libertad liegt die Mündung des Moche-Flusses in den Pazifik. Dort gründete das Volk der Chimú um etwa 1300 seine Hauptstadt Chan Chan (mochica: Sonne-Sonne).

La Libertad ist die einzige Region die alle drei Landschaftstyp des Landes aufweißt (Küste, Gebirge und Regenwald) die Region hat etliche Sandstrände zu bieten, u.a. Huanchaco und Pacasmayo und im Osten herrschen Gebirge vor.

Die Region unterteilt sich in zwölf Provinzen und 83 Distrikte:

Geschichte

Archäologischen Forschungen zufolge, wird die La Libertad Region seit 12. Jahrtausend Bevölkert. Man fand Überreste der Cupisnique, Salinar, Virú, Mochica, Sican, Chachapoya und Chimú-Kulturen.
