Pan and Scan

Pan & Scan [pæn ənd skæn] ist der Vorgang, bei dem versucht wird, einen Teil des Widescreen-Bildes, das im Kino gezeigt wird, auf einem 4:3 oder 16:9-Fernsehbildschirm darzustellen.

Der Vorgang heißt Pan & Scan, da der Videobearbeiter in der Lage ist, sich auf dem Widescreen-Bild hin und her zu bewegen, da das Bild nie komplett dargestellt werden kann. Er ist gezwungen, immer den entscheidenden Bildausschnitt, beispielsweise den gerade sprechenden Darsteller, zu fokussieren. So kommt es, dass im Schnitt ein Film im Fernseher nur 33 - 50 % des Kinofilmbildes enthält. Man sieht also nicht den Film wie im Kino, sondern immer nur einen Teil des Originalfilms. Die andere Möglichkeit, dem Problem der Darstellung eines zu großen Films auf einem zu kleinen Fernseher anzuzeigen, ist Letterboxing, bei dem oben und unten schwarze Balken entstehen, der Film aber im Schnitt zu mindestens 90 % angezeigt wird. Wie viel beim Pan-and-Scan-Verfahren wirklich vom Film zu sehen ist, hängt auch vom jeweiligen Fernseher ab.
