Die meisten Arten sind großäugig, ihr Kopf ist flach. Sie haben getrennte hartstrahlige und weichstrahlige Rückenflossen. Bei einigen Arten fehlt die hartstrahlige. Schnabelfische werden drei bis 25 Zentimeter lang.
Es gibt drei Unterfamilien, 13 Gattungen mit 45 Arten.
