Lage des Distrikts Bobonaro

Die osttimoresische Stadt Bobonaro (Alternativname: Aubá, Tetum: Bobonaru, ehemals Vila Armindo Monteiro) ist die Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Subdistrikts und Sucos. Während der portugiesischen Kolonialzeit war sie auch die Hauptstadt des Distrikts Bobonaro.

Der Ort

Die Stadt liegt etwa 45 km von der Küste entfernt im Nordwesten des Landes in 715 m Höhe über dem Meer. Zur Landeshauptstadt Dili sind es in Luftlinie etwa 60 km nach Nordosten, zur Distriktshauptstadt Maliana etwa 13 km nach Westen. Zur Grenze nach Indonesien sind es ebenfalls nur wenige Kilometer.

Die Stadt hat 6.110 Einwohner (2006) und zieht sich über mehrere Kilometer an der Straße entlang. Der Markt in Bobonaro hat regionale Bedeutung und gilt touristisch als sehenswert.

Der Subdistrikt

Der Subdistrikt teilt sich in 18 Sucos: Ai-Assa, Atu Aben, Bobonaro, Carabau, Colimau, Cota Bo’ot (Cotabot), Ilatalaun (Ilat-Laun), Leber, Lour, Lourba, Maliubu (Male-Ubu), Malilait, Molop, Oe-Leu, Sibuni, Soi Leco (Soilesu), Tapo und Tebabui.

Nordwestlich liegen die Subdistrikte Maliana und Cailaco, im Süden der Subdistrikt Lolotoe, im Südwesten der Distrikt Cova Lima und im Norden der Distrikt Ermera. An einem schmalen Punkt trifft Bobonaro im Osten auch auf den Distrikt Ainaro.

Im Subdistrikt Bobonaro leben 22.756 Menschen (2004). Er ist eines der Zentren der Nationalsprache Bunak in Osttimor. Ihre Sprecher bilden die größte Sprachgruppe im Subdistrikt. Der Altersdurchschnitt beträgt 18,2 Jahre.[1]

88 % der Haushalte bauen Mais an, 84 % Maniok, 71 % Kokosnüsse, 49 % Kaffee und 24 % Reis.[1]
