Phytocoenose

Bei einer Pflanzengemeinschaft, auch Phytozoenose, handelt es sich als wissenschaftliches Untersuchungsobjekt der Geobotanik um einen nichttypisierten Bestand von Pflanzen. Entgegen der Pflanzengesellschaft ist die -gemeinschaft in ihrer floristischen Zusammensetzung nicht definiert. Die Lehre von Pflanzengemeinschaften heißt Phytozoenologie.

Nach Sukatschow wird die Phytozoenose wie folgt definiert:

„Unter Phytozoenose oder Pflanzengemeinschaft soll jede Gesamtheit von Pflanzen verstanden werden, die in einem bestimmten einheitlichen Gebiet der Erdoberfläche leben und die nur in Wechselbeziehung zueinander sowie zu den Bedingungen des Habitats stehen und deshalb ihre eigene Umwelt (Phytomilieu) schaffen.“

Die Phytozoenosen sind ihrerseits ein Teil von komplexeren Natursystemen, den Biogeozoenosen.
