Die Sumpf-Kiefer (Pinus palustris) ist eine Pflanzenart der Gattung Kiefern (Pinus). Sie trägt im Englischen die Trivialnamen Longleaf Pine, Southern Yellow Pine oder früher Pitch Pine, dies führte zu Verwechselung mit der im Englischen gleichnamigen Pechkiefer (Pinus rigida). Sie dient als Wahrzeichen für die US-Bundesstaaten Alabama und North Carolina.

Vorkommen

Die Sumpf-Kiefer ist im Süden Nordamerikas beheimatet. Ihr Areal erstreckt sich dabei an der Küstenlinie von Texas nach Virginia.

Beschreibung

Die Sumpf-Kiefer ist ein immergrüner Baum. Sie kann unter normalen Bedingungen Wuchshöhen von etwa 30 Metern und Durchmesser von 0,7 Metern erreichen. Wie der englische Name es schon besagt, besitzt das Holz eine Gelbfärbung. Es wird meist als Bauholz eingesetzt. Die relativ langen Nadeln der Sumpf-Kiefer weisen eine Länge von 25 bis 40 Zentimeter auf. Am Kurztrieb sind drei Nadeln zusammengefasst.
