Plaintext

Mit Plain text (engl. für Klartext) werden Daten bezeichnet, die direkt unter Verwendung einer Zeichenkodierung in Text umgesetzt werden können. Zudem stellt dieser Text die eigentliche Information dar, das heißt zur Interpretation der Daten ist keine Kenntnis und Auswertung einer speziellen Notation nötig – wie beispielsweise im Fall von XML. Der in den Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) vorgesehene Typ für Plain text ist text/plain.

Wie für Textdateien werden auch für Plain text unterschiedliche Zeichencodierungen verwendet (beispielsweise ASCII, Latin-1 oder UTF-8, weiteres siehe Textdatei). Im Unterschied zum Begriff „Textdatei“ ist die Bezeichnung „Plain text“ nicht notwendigerweise auf Dateiinhalte beschränkt, sondern bezieht sich auf das Datenformat an sich, beispielsweise auch bei Datenübertragung in Verbindung mit Netzwerkprotokollen. Ein weiterer Unterschied dieser Begriffe ist, dass eine Datei auch dann meist als Textdatei bezeichnet wird, wenn der Inhalt in einer speziellen Notation vorliegt (z. B. .doc oder HTML).

Der Begriff plaintext (in diesem Fall im Regelfall zusammengeschrieben) wird auch im Zusammenhang mit Kryptographie verwendet („unverschlüsselter Text“), während cleartext sich üblicherweise auf mangelnde Abhörsicherheit bezieht. Im Deutschen werden beide Begriffe mit Klartext übersetzt.
