Handlung

Betty Rhys-Jones (Brenda Blethyn), die in der Kleinstadt Wrottin-Powys in Wales lebt, kümmert sich um ihre bettlägrige Schwiegermutter, die an Cornflakes erstickt. Ihr Ehemann Hugh ist Bürgermeister der Stadt, der eine Affäre mit seiner Sekretärin Meredith hat. Der Bestattungsunternehmer Boris Plots (Alfred Molina) ist seit Jahrzehnten in Betty verliebt.

Der Amerikaner Frank Featherbed versucht es, mit Discountpreisen und medienwirksamen Aktionen den Markt der Bestattungsdienstleistungen in der Region aufzumischen. Er organisiert auch ungewöhnliche Bestattungsevents.

Betty beginnt eine Affäre mit Boris, der einen Plan entwickelt, wie Betty aus ihrer Ehe herausgelöst werden kann. Er will ihren Tod vortäuschen.
