Population Viability Analysis (PVA) errechnet die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass eine Population in einer definierten Zeit ausstirbt.
Die PVA ist dabei ein Produkt der Mathematik und der Ökologie, wird für jede Population einzeln errechnet und ist damit einzigartig.
Die Notwendigkeit von Schutzmaßnahmen kann damit gezeigt werden. Außerdem können Lebensstadien oder Prozesse identifiziert werden, die für das Überleben der Population kritische Punkte sind. Dort müssen Schutzmaßnahmen dann verstärkt ansetzen.
Für gefährdete Arten kann ein Managementplan erstellt werden, in dem Pro und Contra einer Managementmaßnahme dargestellt wird.
