ProtoStar ist der Name für Telekommunikationssatelliten des US-Unternehmens ProtoStar.

Geschichte

Der erste Satellit wurde von Space Systems/Loral in Kalifornien gebaut. Er sollte eigentlich als ChinaSat-8 Mitte 1999 gestartet werden, was aber Aufgrund von Exportbestimmungen nicht zustande kam. Der Vertrag zur Modifikation des schon gebauten Satelliten zu den Anforderungen von ProtoStar wurde am 5. Januar 2007 abgeschlossen. Am 8. Januar 2007 wurde dann der Vertrag zum Start des Satelliten mit einer Ariane-5 ECA von Arianespace geschlossen. Der Start des nun ProtoStar 1 genannten Satelliten erfolgte am 7. Juli 2008 um 21:47 UTC vom Centre Spatial Guyanais zusammen mit dem Kommunikationssatelliten Badr 6. Er soll von seiner Position 98,5° Ost aus mehr als 150 digitale HDTV-Kanäle, Radio, Pay-Per-View-Kanäle sowie Breitband-Internet für Südostasien liefern.[1] Die Bodenstation für den Satelliten steht in Singapur und wird von SingTel betrieben.


Am 14. Januar 2008 gab Boeing bekannt, dass das Boeing Satellite Development Center in El Segundo, Kalifornien den zweiten Satelliten von ProtoStar auf Basis des Boeing 601HP Satellitenbus bauen wird.[2] Der Satellit sollte ursprünglich für PanAmSat (jetzt Intelsat) als Galaxy-8iR gestartet werden, aber der Vertrag wurde am 15. November 2002 aufgelöst.[3] ProtoStar 2 soll 2009 von International Launch Services durch eine Proton-Trägerrakete gestartet werden.[4]

Technische Daten

ProtoStar 1 basiert auf dessen SS/L1300 Satellitenbus von Space Systems/Loral. Er ist 4,100 kg schwer und verfügt über 22 (16+6) Ku-Band Transponder mit je 125 Watt Leistung und 38 (32+6) C-Band Transponder mit je 37 Watt, wofür die beiden Solarzellenausleger eine Primärleistung von 11 kW liefern. ProtoStar 1 ist für eine Lebensdauer von 17 Jahre ausgelegt.[5] Er ist 3,8 m hoch, 2,4 m breit und hat eine Spannweite von 31,1 m.[6]

ProtoStar 2 verfügt über 10 X/S-Band und 24 Ku-Band transponder und ist mit einem Ionenantrieb ausgerüstet.
