Gabès (arabisch ‏قابس‎, Qābis) ist die größte Stadt im Süden Tunesiens.

Gabès hat 116.323 Einwohner (2004) und liegt an der GP1 Sfax - Médenine, ungefähr 405 km von Tunis entfernt, am Golf von Gabès, der antiken Kleinen Syrte.

Geschichte

Bereits die Phönizier hatten hier einen Handelsplatz errichtet. Unter den Römern wurde der Ort zur Colonia Tacapae ernannt. Unter diesem Namen gehörte er zu Tripolitania und wurde wohl schon von Apuleius erwähnt.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Stadt stark zerstört.

Wirtschaft

Gabès ist das Zentrum einer Küstenoase mit über 500.000 Dattelpalmen und Fruchtbaumkulturen wie z. B. Granatäpfeln. Bekannt ist Gabès auch für die hier produzierte Henna.

Die Wirtschaft von Gabès beruht auf chemischer Industrie, einer Erdölraffinerie, Zement- und Konservenfabriken sowie Fischerei, Tourismus und Kunsthandwerk.
