Res extensa

Das lateinische Wort Res, das in der deutschen Sprache mit Sache, Gegenstand, Ding oder Wesen übersetzt wird, ist ein Grundbegriff der Philosophie. Als Wortbestandteil findet sich Res in vielen historischen Begriffen und in der Nachfolge des römischen Rechts insbesondere auch in zahlreichen Rechtsbegriffen.

In der philosophischen Ontologie wurden unterschiedliche grundlegende Klassifikationen von außerhalb des bloßen Denkens existierenden Gegenständen (res) vorgeschlagen. So unterscheidet zum Beispiel Descartes’ (1596–1650) zwischen dem Mentalen (res cogitans) und dem Physischen (res extensa).
