Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton (* 19. Juni 1809 in London; † 11. August 1885 in Vichy) war ein ein englischer Politiker und Schriftsteller.
Leben und Wirken
Richard Monckton Milnes Honghton (spr. haut'n), aus wohlhabender und angesehener Familie stammend, studierte in Cambridge, wo er 1831 graduiert wurde, trat schon 1837 als Vertreter der Stadt Pontefract ins Unterhaus und behielt diesen Sitz bis zu seiner Erhebung ins Oberhaus 1863. Ein Liberaler, unterstützte er Sir Robert Peel bei der Abschaffung des Kornzolles, schloss sich dann an Lord John Russell an, lehnte aber den Eintritt ins Ministerium Henry John Palmerston ab, obwohl er diesem seine volle Beihilfe lieh. Seine Tätigkeit im Parlament schloß 1846 die erste Bill von Besserungsanstalten jugendlicher Verbrecher ein; auch war er Präsident des großen Besserungsinstituts zu Redhill.
Er mißbilligte William Ewart Gladstones russenfreundliche Politik 1876-80 und strebte die Versöhnung mit Irland an. Er starb 10. Aug. 1885 in Vichy.
Mehrere Gedichtsammlungen aus seiner Feder wurden günstig aufgenommen, so:
- Poems of many years,
- Psalm leaves etc. (gesammelt als "Poetical.works", 2. Aufl. 1877, 2 Bde.).
Auch zahlreiche kirchlich-politische Flugschriften sowie Monographs. personal and political (1873) und schließlich eine Denkschrift über W. S. Landor hat H. veröffentlicht.
