Lawinenfotodioden (englisch avalanche photodiode, daher oft APD genannt) sind hochempfindliche und schnelle Fotodioden. Sie nutzen den Lawinen-Durchbruch (Avalanche-Effekt), der auch in Zener-Dioden verwendet wird.

Sie können als das Halbleiteräquivalent zum Photomultiplier betrachtet werden. Beim Anlegen einer hohen Sperrspannung nahe der Lawinen-Durchbruch-Spannung zeigen Lawinenfotodioden eine interne Verstärkung, die durch Stoßionisation in der Sperrschicht hervorgerufen wird.

Werden Avalanche-Photodioden (APD) oberhalb der Durchbruchspannung im sogenannten Geiger-Modus betrieben, erreichen sie eine Verstärkung von 1:105. Sie werden als G-APD oder auch Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) bezeichnet. Ein einzelnes Photon löst eine leicht meßbare Ladungslawine aus. Die Detektorelektronik stellt sicher, dass die Diode dabei nicht zerstört und anschließend wieder zurückgesetzt wird.
