Die Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (RI) war eine US-amerikanische Eisenbahngesellschaft mit Sitz in Chicago. Sie war auch unter dem Namen Rock Island Line, in ihren letzten Jahren außerdem als THE ROCK bekannt.
Streckennetz

Das Netz der Rock Island erstreckte sich hauptsächlich über die Bundesstaaten Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma und Texas. Die beiden östlichsten Punkte des Streckennetzes waren Chicago und Memphis (Tennessee). Im Westen reichte das Streckennetz bis nach Denver und Santa Rosa (New Mexico), im Süden bis nach Galveston in Texas und Eunice in Louisiana und im Norden bis nach Minneapolis. Die wichtigsten Strecken führten von Chicago über Des Moines und Omaha nach Denver, von Minneapolis über Des Moines nach Kansas City (Missouri), von St. Louis über Kansas City nach Santa Rosa, von Herington in Kansas über Dallas-Fort Worth nach Galveston und von Santa Rosa nach Memphis (Tennessee). Das Streckennetz war in Iowa am dichtesten und erreichte dort auch die meisten Städte eines Staates.
Geschichte

1851 begann die vier Jahre zuvor gegründete Chicago & Rock Island Railroad mit dem Bau einer Strecke von Rock Island am Mississippi River nach La Salle, wo ein Anschluss an den Illinois and Michigan Canal nach Chicago geplant war. Ihr erster Zug fuhr am 10. Oktober 1852. Nach ihrem dritten Bankrott 1975 fiel die Gesellschaft in Insolvenz. Nachdem die Sanierung scheiterte, musste sie schließlich liquidiert werden. Ihr letzter Zug fuhr am 31. März 1980. Der Zusammenbruch der Rock Island war der größte in der US-amerikanischen Eisenbahngeschichte.
