Service Indicator

Eine ISDN-Dienstkennung (englisch Service Indicator, SI) ermöglicht eine Unterscheidung verschiedener Dienste bei einem ISDN-Anschluss.

Über das ISDN können verschiedene Arten von Daten übertragen werden. Durch Dienstkennungen können diese verschiedenen Dienste unterschieden werden und es kann sichergestellt werden, dass nur ein kompatibles Endgerät die Verbindung entgegennehmen kann.

Damit dieses Konzept funktioniert, muss der A-Teilnehmer bei seinem Anruf die richtige Dienstkennung einstellen. Bei analogen Geräten (Telefon oder Fax) ist dies jedoch nicht immer möglich - meistens werden analoge Verbindungen mit der gleichen Dienstkennung initiiert. Aus diesem Grund sollte ein analoger B-Teilnehmer grundsätzlich alle analogen Verbindungen annehmen - eine automatische Trennung zwischen zum Beispiel einem Telefongespräch und einem Fax ist nur aufgrund der Dienstkennung meistens nicht möglich.
