Sneakernet

Turnschuhnetzwerk (engl.: Sneaker Network) ist ein eher ironischer Begriff für den Austausch von Daten zwischen zwei oder mehreren Computern, der nicht über ein herkömmliches Netzwerk, sondern per Datenträger (z. B. Diskette oder USB-Stick) oftmals zu Fuß von A nach B statt findet. Der Träger muss bei dieser Art des Datenaustausches nicht zwingend Turnschuhe tragen.[1] Früher wählte man diesen Übertragungsweg in der Regel aufgrund fehlender oder inkompatibler Netzwerkschnittstellen. In speziellen Fällen kommt die Turnschuh-Schnittstelle bei der Konfiguration höchst sicherer Systeme zur Anwendung, wenn der Anschluss an ein Netzwerk aufgrund des geforderten Sicherheitsniveaus nicht in Frage kommt. Auch in Unternehmen war diese Art des Datenträgeraustauschs durchaus beliebt, so wurden Daten auf Disketten oder Magnetbändern zwischen einzelnen Unternehmen ausgetauscht.[2]

Gerade auch für sehr große Datenmengen bietet sich das Turnschuhnetzwerk an. So haben Forscher auf diese Weise 120 Terabyte Daten des Weltraumteleskops Hubble aus ihren Forschungseinrichtungen in ein Google-Rechenzentrum transportiert.[3]

Seit Einführung wesentlich größerer Speicher wie USB-Sticks und mobiler Festplatten sind private Turnschuhnetzwerke zum Filesharen wieder populärer geworden.[4]

Für Leistungsfähigkeit von Verbindungsnetzwerken sind die beiden Parameter Latenz und Bandbreite ausschlaggebend.[5] Trotz vermeintlich hoher Latenzen ist die Bandbreite sehr groß (oft 500 MB bis zu mehreren GB). Eine oft unterschätzte Gefahr beim Turnschuhnetzwerk stellt die Übertragung von Viren dar.[6]

Der amerikanische Informatiker Andrew S. Tanenbaum verweist mit dem Satz: „Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.“ (etwa: Unterschätze niemals die Bandbreite eines Kleintransporters voll mit Datenbändern, der die Autobahn herunter rast) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit des Konzepts.[7]
