Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard) wird die nächste Version des Betriebssystems Mac OS X des Unternehmens Apple Inc.. Es wird als Nachfolger von Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard) voraussichtlich im Sommer 2009 erscheinen und beinhaltet kaum neue Funktionen, sondern nur Verbesserungen der bestehenden Technik und zahlreiche Detailänderungen, die den Arbeitsablauf mit dem Betriebssystem verbessern sollen[1].

Neue Features in Snow Leopard

Neben einer allgemeinen Erhöhung der Effizienz und Leistung hat Apple folgende Funktionen angekündigt:

  • Native Unterstützung von Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 in den Applikationen Mail, Adressbuch sowie iCal.
  • Weniger Speicherverbrauch sowohl auf der Festplatte als auch im Arbeitsspeicher sowie eine deutlich schnellere Installation gegenüber Leopard.[2]
  • Unterstützung von bis zu 16 TB Arbeitsspeicher.
  • Grand Central: Eine Programmiertechnologie, die durch die Vereinigung von Multicore-Hauptprozessoren mit leistungsfähigen Grafikprozessoren eine signifikante Leistungssteigerung verspricht.
  • Quick Time X wird moderne Multimediacodecs besser unterstützen und leistungsfähiger werden.
  • Open Computing Language soll den Entwicklern die Nutzung des Grafikprozessors für nicht-grafische Anwendungen erleichtern.
  • Ein 64-Bit Kernel, der eine komplette 64-Bit-Umgebung für Anwendungen bietet. Damit finalisiert Apple den langen Prozess, Hard- und Software auf 64 Bit umzustellen, der schon im Jahr 2003 mit Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther) begonnen hatte[3].
  • Finder soll komplett neu in Apples Cocoa-API geschrieben werden[4].
  • Bessere Unterstützung für JavaScript.

Die Serverversion von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard wird zudem das Dateisystem ZFS vollständig unterstützen[5].

Die am 6. März 2009 erschienene Entwicklerversion 10A286 beinhaltete bereits einen komplett neu designten Quick-Time-Player sowie den neuen auf Cocoa basierende Finder. Zudem soll es noch einige optische Verbesserungen geben[6].
