Songster

Ein Songster ist die Bezeichnung für einen spezielle Form des Wandermusikers im Süden der USA am Ende des 19., Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Repertoire der Songster setzte sich aus Balladen, Spirituals und beliebten Melodien zusammen. Die Songster hatten deutlichen Einfluss auf den sich formenden Blues, viele frühe Bluesmusiker begannen als Songster.

Songster waren nicht nur auf eigene Faust unterwegs, sondern begleiteten häufig auch sogenannte Medicine Shows, die zwecks des Verkaufs von Salben und Elixieren von Ort zu Ort zogen. Songster erfüllten hier die Aufgabe, als Unterhalter ein Publikum anzuziehen, denen dann im Anschluss die Bereitungen angeboten wurden.
