Sotheby’s ist eines der traditionsreichsten Auktionshäuser der Welt.

Es wurde im Jahre 1744 vom Buchhändler Samuel Baker in London gegründet. Die erste Auktion durch Gründer Samuel Baker fand am 11. März 1744 statt, als er einige hundert wertvolle Bücher verkaufte. Das Geschäftsfeld erweiterte sich im Laufe der Zeit um Versteigerungen von Druckgraphiken, Medaillen und Münzen. Der langjährige Präsident Peter Wilson betrieb nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die Internationalisierung des Auktionshauses. 1964 wurde das bedeutende amerikanische Auktionshaus Parke-Bernet erworben, Sotheby’s wurde so das größte amerikanische Auktionshaus. 1982 erwarb das US-Unternehmen General Felt Industries eine Beteiligung von 14 Prozent am Auktionshaus. Mit 5,9 Prozent ist seit 2009 der amerikanische Hedgefonds-Manager Steven A. Cohen am Unternehmen beteiligt.[1]

In Deutschland ist Sotheby’s seit 1976 als eigene GmbH mit heute sechs Büros (Frankfurt, München, Köln, Hamburg, Berlin und Hannover) vertreten. Im Geschäftsjahr 1981/1982 kommt es zu einem Verlust vor Steuern von 3,06 Millionen Pfund. Seit dem Jahr 2000 versteigert Sotheby’s Kunst auch im Internet.

Bedeutende Auktionen

Im Juni 1978 wurde die Kunst- und Kunsthandwerksammlung von Robert von Hirsch für 18,4 Mill. Pfund (damals 78 Mill. DM) versteigert.

Im Mai 1983 werden in der New Yorker Niederlassung Sotheby Parke Bernet zwei Werke von Edgar Degas aus dem Jahr 1880 für 9,23 Millionen DM (4,7 Millionen Euro) verkauft.

Im Juni 2006 wurde Gustav Klimts Bild Die Goldene Adele für die Rekordsumme von 135 Millionen Dollar bei Sotheby’s versteigert. Es wurde vom amerikanischen Milliardär Ronald S. Lauder erworben. Mit diesem Preis löste es das Werk Junge mit Pfeife von Pablo Picasso als teuerstes Gemälde der Welt ab, das 2004 für 104,2 Millionen Dollar versteigert wurde. Beide Werke versteigerte der Star-Auktionator Tobias Meyer.

Sotheby’s hat heute einen jährlichen Umsatz von ca. 2 Milliarden US-$.
