Der Sterility assurance level, kurz SAL- Wert genannt, findet vor allem in der pharmazeutischen Herstellung steriler Produkte Anwendung. Er definiert die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ein einzelnes Produkt nach dem Sterilisierungsprozess trotzdem kontaminiert ist.
Gemäß Europäischem Arzneibuch sollte der SAL-Wert für Parenteralia maximal 10-6 betragen. Dies bedeutet, dass in der Produktion zum Beispiel von Ampullen unter einer Million maximal eine kontaminiert mit einem lebensfähigem Keim sein darf.
SAL wird auch für die Bewertung des Sterilisierungsprozesses verwendet. Ein Prozess mit hohem SAL ist sehr sicher.
