Yma Sumac (* 10. September 1922 in Ichocán, Peru; † 1. November 2008 in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, Kalifornien; Ima sumaq (Quechua: „Wie schön“); auch Imma Sumack oder Ima Sumack; eigentlicher Name Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo) war eine peruanische Sängerin.

Leben und Wirken

Sie konnte mit ihrer Stimme den erstaunlichen Tonumfang von viereinhalb, in jungen Jahren sogar sechs Oktaven abdecken, d. h. dass sie von tiefen Alt-Noten bis hin zu hohen Pfeifstimmen-Noten Lieder perfekt intonieren konnte. Als Volksliedsängerin der Anden wurde sie in ihrer Heimat, der Stadt Ichocán, entdeckt. Sie studierte in Lima und trat in Peru live und auch im Rundfunk auf. Sie trat in Moisés Vivancos Tanzgruppe Compania Peruana de Arte auf und heiratete Vivanco 1942. 1943 machte sie in Argentinien Volksmusikaufnahmen. 1946 hatte sie Auftritte nur noch in kleinerem Ensemble, im Inca Taky Trio, mit ihrem Mann an der Gitarre und ihrer Cousine Cholita Rivero als Kontra-Altistin und ihr selbst als Sopran. 1954 trat sie in dem Film „Secret of the Incas“ auf, 1957 in dem Film „Omar Khayyam“. 1992 drehte das deutsche Fernsehen die Dokumentation „Hollywoods Inkaprinzessin“ über sie.

1998 wurde ihre Musik Teil eines Spielfilms der Coen-Brüder: The Big Lebowski.

Im Mai 2006 wurde ihr der Orden El Sol del Perú verliehen. Im gleichen Jahr wurde ihr Titel „Xtabay“ ein Teil des deutschen Kinospielfilms „Die Österreichische Methode“, der im Oktober 2006 seine Uraufführung auf den 40. Internationalen Hofer Filmtagen hatte und im Frühjahr 2008 in den deutschen Kinos startete.

Im Jahre 2007 wurde ihr Lied „Tumpa“ für einen Werbespot (Magnum Java Milk Choc) verwendet.
