Svartalfheim

Schwarzalbenheim (auch Schwarzelfenheim; nord. Svartalfheim) ist in der nordischen Mythologie das Zwergenreich.

Es bezeichnet die Heimat der Naturgeister, die mit der Materie verbunden sind. Der Name Alben bezeichnet in der Nordischen Mythologie die Zwerge und Gnome.

Im heutigen Sprachgebrauch findet man diese Bezeichnung noch im Wort Albtraum, früher auch "Albdruck". Auch heute noch gibt es Menschen, die sich bei schlechten Träumen von einer Art Gnom bedrückt fühlen, früher ging man davon aus, dass ein Alb auf der Brust des Träumenden sitzt und diesen beengt.

Der Gegenpol zum Zwergenreich im nordischen Kosmos, der Weltesche Yggdrasil ist Alfheimr (Lichtelfenheim), wo die schönen und lichtverbundenen Elfen wohnen.
