Syncellus

Syncellus (griech. Synkellos Zellengenosse; pl. Synkelloi) ist die Bezeichnung für einen persönlichen Berater und Mitarbeiter eines Bischofs in Fragen der Verwaltung und des Kirchenrechts. Der Synkellos ist in der Regel ein geweihter Priester.

Im kirchlichen Gebrauch meint man damit meistens den früheren Brauch eines Priesters oder Diakons, konstant an der Seite eines Patriarchen zu leben. Die Funktion des Syncellus glich der eines Privatsekretärs. Er war die wichtigste Person nach dem Patriarchen und häufig dessen designierter Nachfolger.

Die Bezeichnung Syncellus ist in den byzantinischen (griechisch-orthodoxen), syrisch-orthodoxen Kirchen und der Melkitischen Griechisch-Katholischen Kirche bekannt. Das Amt entspricht in etwa dem eines Generalvikars in der katholischen Kirche. In der armenischen Kirche gibt es vergleichbar mit dieser Funktion den Vardapet.
