Tikrit (arabisch ‏تكريت‎, DMG Tikrīt, auch Takrit genannt) ist eine irakische Stadt am Fluss Tigris mit rund 100.000 Einwohnern etwa 175 km nördlich von Bagdad mit fast ausschließlich sunnitischer Bevölkerung. Tikrit ist Hauptstadt der Provinz Salah ad-Din.

Tikrit ist im Westen vor allem als Geburtsort des am 30. Dezember 2006 hingerichteten langjährigen irakischen Machthabers Saddam Hussein und als Hauptsitz seines Familienclans bekannt geworden. Hussein hatte den Ausbau der Stadt forciert. In neuester Zeit ist die Stadt als Zentrum des Widerstands gegen die US-amerikanische Besetzung des Iraks bekannt.

Tikrit ist auch eine bedeutende Stadt für die muslimische Welt: Hier wurde im 12. Jahrhundert Sultan Saladin geboren, der Kurde, der im Mittelalter die islamischen Truppen mit großem Erfolg gegen die christlichen Kreuzritter anführte. 1187 eroberte er Jerusalem.

Auch für die orientalischen Christen spielte Tikrit eine bedeutende Rolle. Bis in die Zeit Saladins hinein waren die Bewohner dieser Handelsmetropole überwiegend Christen. Im Mittelalter war Tikrit der Sitz des Maphrians, des rangzweiten Metropoliten der syrisch-orthodoxen Kirche unmittelbar nach dem Patriarchen.
