Als Tepalen bezeichnet man Blütenhüllblätter, wenn sie mehr oder weniger gleichgeformt und gefärbt sind. Dann nennt man das Perianth Perigon, alle Perigonblätter einer Blüte sehen also fast oder ganz gleich aus.

Im Gegensatz dazu sind die Blütenhüllblätter bei einem doppelten Perianth in zwei unterschiedliche Blütenblattkreise gegliedert, dann sind die Blütenhüllblätter in Kelchblätter (Sepalen) und Kronblätter (Petalen) differenziert, denn diese sind in Form, Größe und Farbe mehr oder weniger verschieden.

Anordnung und Formen

Tepalen können in zwei oder mehr Kreisen oder Schraubenumgängen angeordnet sein. Sie können entweder kronblattartig (corrollinisch) ausgebildet und gefärbt sein wie z. B. bei der Tulpe oder aber unscheinbar grün sein wie beispielsweise bei Acorus.

Vorkommen

Tepalen kommen typischerweise bei den Einkeimblättrigen Pflanzen vor (aber nicht alle Einkeimblättrigen Pflanzen haben Tepalen, bei einigen Taxa wie den Bromeliaceae liegt auch eine Differenzierung in Sepalen und Petalen vor), sind aber auch bei den primitiveren Familien der Dreifurchenpollen-Zweikeimblättrigen Pflanzen, wie den Magnoliengewächsen anzutreffen.
