The Darkest Hour

The Darkest Hour (engl. „Die dunkelste Stunde“) ist eine Phrase, die vom britischen Premierminister Winston Churchill während des Zweiten Weltkriegs geprägt wurde, um die Zeit zwischen der Kapitulation Frankreichs 1940 und der Invasion Russlands 1941 zu beschreiben. Während dieser Zeitspanne stand das Britische Commonwealth allein gegen Nazideutschland und die Achsenmächte in Europa. Insbesondere stand der Ausdruck für die Zeit, als sich Großbritannien einer drohenden Invasion ausgesetzt sah und nachdem die Britische Armee aus Dünkirchen evakuiert wurde sowie vor dem Sieg in der Luftschlacht um England.

Der 10. Mai 1941 wird oftmals als der dunkelste Moment bezeichnet, als bei Luftangriffen der Luftwaffe 1500 Zivilsten allein in London starben.
