The Fields of Athenry

The Fields of Athenry ist ein Lied über die Irische Hungersnot zwischen 1846 und 1849.

Das Lied, das in den 1970er Jahren von dem Iren Pete St. John geschrieben und u. a. von dem irischen Sänger Paddy Reilly aufgenommen wurde, erzählt von einem Mann, der, um seine Familie vor dem Hungerstod zu retten, Getreide stiehlt und dafür nach Australien (Botany Bay) deportiert wird.

Das Lied wurde von vielen Sängern und Bands gecovert. Es wird außerdem mit mehreren irischen und britischen Rugby- und Fußballmannschaften in Verbindung gebracht, deren Fans es jeweils während den Spielen singen. Darunter sind u. a. die irische Fußball- sowie Rugby-Nationalmannschaft, Munster Rugby, London Irish und Celtic Glasgow. Eine Abwandlung, Fields of Anfield Road, singen die Fans des englischen Traditionsklubs FC Liverpool.

Neben den Wolfe Tones und No Use For A Name (1997 auf Making Friends) hat unter anderem auch die Gruppe Dropkick Murphys 2003 eine Punk-Rock-Version aufgenommen und auf ihrem Album Blackout veröffentlicht.
