Ein Totem-Pole-Ausgang oder auch Gegentakt-Ausgangsstufe ist eine dem normalen TTL-Gatter nachgeschaltete Gegentaktstufe, um am Ausgang höhere Ströme zu ermöglichen. Die Schaltung findet vor allem bei TTL-Bausteinen Anwendung. Sie ist für hohe Schaltgeschwindigkeit optimiert und für Analogsignale ungeeignet.

Der Name der Schaltung bezieht sich auf die Symbolanordnung für die Endstufentransistoren im Schaltbild. Diese werden normalerweise übereinander gezeichnet, vergleichbar einem Totempfahl der Indianer (engl.: totem pole).

Ein normales TTL-Gatter mit Widerstand und Transistor in Reihe (bei der der logische Ausgang zwischen Transistor und Widerstand abgegriffen wird), kann nur sehr begrenzt höhere Ströme liefern. Dies liegt daran, dass der Widerstand quasi als Vorwiderstand für den Ausgang wirkt und für einen hohen Strom entsprechend klein werden müsste. Schaltet aber dann der Transistor (in Reihe!) durch, würde ein nutzloser hoher Strom nur durch den (jetzt gedanklich niederohmigen) Widerstand und den durchgeschalteten Transistor fließen.

Um dieses Problem zu umgehen, schaltet man an den Ausgang noch eine Gegentaktstufe. Diese besteht aus zwei in Reihe geschalteten Transistoren, wobei entweder der eine oder der andere durchschaltet, nicht aber beide Transistoren zusammen (eben im Gegentakt). Nur wenn der Zustand des Ausgangs wechselt, schalten kurzzeitig beide Transistoren. Um diesen Kurzschluss-Strom zu begrenzen wird dem oberen Transistor ein Widerstand vorgeschaltet. Es wäre auch möglich, dass beide Transistoren sperren, dann wird der Ausgang hochohmig (siehe Tri-State).

Das Besondere an dieser Gegentaktstufe ist, dass diese nicht wie sonst oft mit einem pnp- und einem npn-Transistor (Komplementär-Ausgang), sondern im Allgemeinen mit zwei npn-Transistoren realisiert wird. Dies ergibt sich aus dem Aufbau des restlichen Gatters.

Der Totem-Pole-Ausgang gilt als normaler Ausgang, darf jedoch nicht mit anderen TTL-Ausgängen zusammengeschlossen werden, da sonst die Gefahr eines Zusammenschluss von logisch 0 und 1 besteht, was ggf. zu einem hohen Strom führen kann (siehe Weblink).
