Barley Wine ist eine sehr starke Alesorte, mit mindestens 7 % Alkoholgehalt, allerdings auch teilweise mit bis zu 13 %, sowie hoher Stammwürze. Der Name leitet sich vom Wein (englisch: Wine) ab, da der Alkoholgehalt eher dem eines Weins ähnelt, denn dem eines normalen Bieres.

Geschmack

Barley Wines werden bevorzugt im Winter konsumiert, weisen eine meist rötliche, dunkle Färbung auf. Außerdem zeichnen sie sich durch ihre Schaumbildung aus, welche so fest ist, dass sich auch im leeren Glas noch Schaumstrukturen halten. Sie schmecken normalerweise zuerst wegen ihres hohen Alkoholgehaltes süßlich, schlagen jedoch im Abgang ins Bittere und hopfige über. Dies geschieht wegen ihres ebenfalls relativ hohen Stammwürzanteils. Des Weiteren existieren auch Waldbeeren, Eiche, Whisky und Salzwasseraromen, sowie häufig Weingeschmack, welcher durch die hohe Konzentration von Ale-Hefe erreicht wird. Meist erreicht dieses Bier sein optimales Aroma erst nach einem 25-jährigen Reifeprozess in der Flasche. Am besten schmeckt dieses Bier aus kleinen Gläsern, zu Dessert und Zigarren.
