Earl of Lucan ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of Ireland, der zweimal verliehen wurde. Er ist benannt nach der Stadt Lucan im heutigen County South Dublin in Irland und wird nunmehr von der Familie Bingham getragen.

Verleihungen

Der Titel wurde erstmalig im Jahre 1691 von König Jakob II., der allerdings seit der Glorious Revolution 1688 entthront war, an Patrick Sarsfield verliehen, einen irischen General im jakobitischen Heer. Er erlosch 1718, als dessen Sohn im Exil ohne Titelerben starb.

Die zweite Verleihung erfolgte 1795 an Charles Bingham, den Großneffen von Sarsfield. Da allerdings umstritten ist, ob Jakob II. zu der Zeit überhaupt noch wirksam Titel verleihen konnte, wird diese Verleihung teilweise auch als die erste angesehen.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Nachgeordnete Titel des Earl of Lucan sind Baron Lucan, of Castlebar im County Mayo, (geschaffen 1776) und Baron Bingham, of Melcombe Bingham in der Grafschaft Dorset (geschaffen 1934). Während der erstgenannte Titel ebenfalls zur Peerage of Ireland gehört, ist der zweite der Peerage of the United Kingdom zugeordnet, so dass der Earl einen Sitz im House of Lords hatte.

Der Titelerbe führt den Höflichkeitstitel Baron Bingham.

Aktuelle Situation

1974 verschwand der aktuelle Träger des Titels Richard Bingham, 7. Earl of Lucan, der mutmaßlich das Kindermädchen seiner Kinder ermordet haben soll. Solange er nicht für tot erklärt ist, kann sein Sohn den Titel nicht erben.

Der Lordkanzler wies 1999 einen Antrag des Sohnes zurück, den Sitz im House of Lords einnehmen zu dürfen. Inzwischen ist der Earl zwar durch den High Court of Justice für tot erklärt, jedoch wurde nicht die für die Erbfolge erforderliche Sterbeurkunde erteilt.
